 Mike takes Lizzy to a world where passions clash , joy and despair run rampant and sexual tension builds up around his abstinence from it . She is very angry and frustrated in her longing for him

Finally they have sex after being together for two years and they have a physical fight afterwards . They both feet very emotional and she snaps at him in a way that feels hurtful to him . She lunges at his back and bites his neck like a wild animal . He screams for help from the neighbours  fearing that she will kill him . They are in Lauredanas flat

It takes a while to get to know each other sexually , and they  often make love after a fight , making love slowly while continuing to talk and share fantasies about being teenagers  . A burning kind of love , truly crazy and insane
shes too inexperienced to orgasm from sex , she’s not really thought about it and would do that later when he is out

Lizzy also turns into a werewolf sometimes . She puts him in a neck collar on one occasion , brakes his finger and bruises his balls on other occasions . And then takes a trip to visit him in hospital like a dutiful girlfriend . Nobody would have guessed who caused his injuries 

Friends are worried she will die there ‘ hes gonna to fookin kill ya , go out and LIVE ' says Tracy . Lizzy couldnt understand her and she ran off screaming

He isn’t really a macho man but volatile and psychotic . And it annoys her when he plays space invaders indoors on a sunny day with the curtains closed . And talks and talks all night so that she cant sleep it drives her round the bend and up the wall and back again

When it all goes pear shaped they  go out into the street and chant ‘ Allah Huagba ‘ . It doesn’t really stop the violence but seems to bring them great joy and euphoria

The sex flows without beginning or end . One time he opens the door and jumps her from behind putting his hand over her mouth . He's exciting like that .

She'll sob so deeply when they fall out and not see each other for months . But he can tell there hasn’t been anyone else

Her feeling of psychosis starts when she sees him bleeding in the road after putting his arm through a window 

 

N theyre trying to build this life around Sahaja Yoga which is a very beautiful thing created by Shri Mataji who they have seen live . They listen to indian music , burn insence and try to raise the kundalini, which of course will only rise when youre not expecting it ! they have beautiful times meditating together , studying the scriptures , and sometimes come to blows over the meaning of a verse , so passionately do they feel it . Or over the lyrics of a song . They listen deeply to the songs and take the words to heart . Like Stevie Wonders part time lover turn into an argument for Lizzy and Mike , with her being in the role of part time lover . A view shared by some of the religious people we encounter who challenge us on our living in sin and ask what sort of a wedding we are contemplating . 

 

And sometimes you see the point of that like would you marry him ?  his sister thinks Lizzy should take a legal stand and get him put away as a way of showing her commitment . And she thinks how would i know with all this fighting going on i cant see the wood for the trees . But theyre asking you to think about it on a deeper level . And in fact having sex in such a volatile situation is very dangerous . Bud sometimes weeps with fear for his sisters safety 

But the good times are too good to let go of , rambling round London meeting friends and buskers , staying too long in eating establisments , running from the police , chasing each other , it gave her academic body a workout . and he teaches her so much about emotional honesty , which he knows far more about than she does . Even though shes the female . Like knowing when someones not reallly listening , or is not speaking from the heart 

And their friends in the zeitgeist are exploring similar things, some of them with the Gohonzon , there are two having a relationship based on that . So exploring eastern religions is a big thing in this 1980s era , young people seeking a new way of life based on different values , not exaclty the sleeping around of the sixties , we really feel our relationships are going to work out . Something that our therapists dont think will happen 

they lie in bed listening to very emotional music like brothers in arms , talking about the lonely souls out there reaching out for each other and how theres not enough love in the world . They feel they can offer that themselves, they can take on the world , they can make a difference. they so feel this . And all the world sees is two crazy people fighting in the road in coloured socks and shorts . Being laughed at by construction workers

Stuart sees him off when the fighting gets too bad. And she sees off his druggy friends . The house is full of heroin smoke even in the attic where Lizzy is sleeping on her own . It gets difficult to breathe in there . They act as bouncers for each other . Until it becomes too dangerous living there with people kicking the door in

And Lizzy is placed in a half way house . Where there are people coming out of prisons, psychiatric hospitals, the streets . And even one man recovering from brain surgery ! There is a burglary there every day and they all have their doors kicked in . Yet the council won’t let them put extra locks on the doors because it would ‘ damage council property ‘ !!! They form their own support group to cope with this Kafka - esque situation where she lives for a year . Burglars steal £90 out of the electricity meter , which Lizzy has to pay back to the council ! A Mark Gertler painting comes to mind ! 

Lizzys ten year relationship with Mike comes to an end actually when Stuart hits her . Stuart is much stronger than Mike and his house is her only ' safe place ' . they have an argument over who is paying the bills and she chucks a bucket of water on him . Then he punches her forhead and at that moment she realises she needs help and walks into the local mental health day centre , fearing they will immediately put her away . Which of course they dont , that is to come much later on . She finds in there friendly social workers and a whole host of other mentally ill people for her to relate to that help her to leave Mike . As if she has now found a room full of Mikes . Only to then choose other mentally ill boyfriends with whom to trauma bond . i know thats not the correct use of ' trauma bond ' but people are using it that way . Because how else do you describe a relationship based on your shared trauma ? 

And Lizzy agrees in rejecting alot of what religion offers. But with Mike she has a powerful experience which has nothing to do with churches , more like a rock n roll trippy explosion of lightning . After she comes off all the substances .

Lizzy bites down on his finger until he screams like an old man . the door is locked from the inside . She invokes Shri Kalki and he appears before her . They scream with laughter together and fall asleep on the grass at Trafalgar Square , the traffic thundering blissfully in their ears 

she harrasses him at work where he is working as a draughtsman and destroys some of his craft work . if youre going to california playing in the background , the day the music died , n she knows why the music died , long before she hears it . They live out the lyrics . China Crisis you did cut me is the most iconic song of their relationship 

living on £60 a week she knows poverty and hunger , sometimes Mike can afford a meal and she cant its really tight , they argue about it , whos bread it is , Bud would also argue about bread , they all eat Hovis Granary and make toast on the electric fire  

Lizzy manages to experience intense passion without any proper sense of loyalty , and half of her is deleriously concussed and missing her old life wanting to got back to college . Hazard is playing . shes in the toilet and somebody is kicking the door in . The music is romantic , not hearts and flowers romantic but the romance of the battle field , a centre heart explosion he calls it . She ends up on prozac 

Friends and relatives come knocking on his door desperately looking for Lizzy , her father stands there shouting and crying to no avail . Two friends climb over his back wall and knock on the back door . They have a proper sense of loyalty 

one of Mikes friends says that Mike is a master of black magic . How has he taken down such a strong intellectual woman ? people want to feel something even bad stuff . if youre lucky you can dissociate from physical pain , like when she goes over the handle bars of her bike she grazes her hands and kneess and feels fantastic ! other times shes injured herself very badly , screamed in pain but is somewhere else in her mind

Mike says that cigarettes and alcohol will cause him to miss a part of himself . But please feel free to punch me in the face ! 

Lizzy is advised by therapists to leave Mike which she does for a couple of years
