people drive cars and have children 

they go home to somebody 

except for us 


we put our key in the door and theres nobody there 

just the ticking of a clock or the droning of a television 

the phone never rings and nobody sings 

and we don't know why its this way 

we together are alone 

theres a book called the Lonely Crowd 

the wind whistles in the chimney 

and the pipes rattle and we listen to ourselves breathe ...
